19th January 2018: Kings Juniors Primary Big Schools Birdwatch

Birdwatcher’s from King’s Junior Division joined Wildlife Explorer Leaders in Victoria Park for their Big School Birdwatch – there had been overnight snow and ice which had mainly cleared for a sunny but bitterly cold morning.

Children could hear lots of birds singing in the trees but they proved challenging to spot. Students from Year 3 and 4 used binoculars and a telescope to build up a fabulous list of 20 different species and they were able to observe some very interesting behaviour. As well as three robins fighting valiantly for territory we also saw a nuthatch fighting with a pair of great tits over the custody of a nestbox.

Some members of our volunteer leader team then went into school during the lunch hour to run another birdwatch so that interested children from Year 1 and 2, as well as Year 5 and Year 6 come along to a drop-in session and take part.

There were plenty of magpies flitting among the trees and the group spotted groups of mallard and Canada geese too.
